FCA US said it’s recalling an estimated 86,403 older-model SUVs and trucks in the U.S. to replace defective air bags manufactured by Takata.

The recall targets driver-side or passenger-side air bags in certain 2009-model year Chrysler Aspen and Dodge Durango SUVs, 2010 Ram 3500 chassis cabs, and 2005-2009 Ram 2500 pickup trucks.

Set to get under way Jan. 11, this recall expansion is aimed at replacing additional Takata-made air bag inflators at risk for exploding upon air bag deployment during a crash. The automaker said it became aware of the presence of these particular faulty air bags while conducting a review of two other recall campaigns.

Defective Takata air bags, installed in vehicles made by 19 different automakers, have been linked to 11 deaths and approximately 180 injuries in the U.S., according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The faulty air bag inflators use an ammonium nitrate-based propellant without a chemical drying agent.
