Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 135,683 vehicles in the 2009 and 2010 model years so dealers can address a potential problem with the antilock brake system, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The recall covers 2009- and 2010-model year Volkswagen Jetta A5 Sedans as well as 2009-MY Volkswagen Jetta SportWagen, Eos, GTI, Rabbit, and Audi A3 vehicles. Also included are 2010-MY Volkswagen Golf A6 vehicles.

The antilock brake system (ABS) control unit in these cars may fail during ABS or electronic stability control (ESC) activation, possibly causing a loss of vehicle control, NHTSA said.

To fix the problem, dealers will update the ABS control module software and improve the module’s self-testing abilities. Any module that fails the new diagnostic test will be replaced. These repairs will be made free of charge.

Vehicle owners can reach Volkswagen customer service at (800) 893-5298.
