Azuga: Gamification Comes to GPS-Tracking

Azuga

Ever since GPS-based fleet tracking was introduced in the early 1990s, drivers have objected to the big-brother aspect of the technology. Today, GPS tracking is so common that it has become more or less accepted by drivers.

Nevertheless, many drivers still distrust management and the uses they believe the company is making of the data being collected.

Now, however, Azuga, a Silicon Valley start-up, is applying gamification techniques to resolving any remaining tension between management and drivers.

Azuga plugs into the OBD-II port and delivers location data, fuel use, engine parameters hard braking, and jack rabbit acceleration, all at a price of less than $1.00 per vehicle per day.

Azuga’s Fleet Mobile app incorporates gamification to all drivers to coach themselves to improve their driving. Drivers will be able to view the same driver behavior data that managers have seen all along, and improve their performance. Drivers can also see data on their colleagues, stimulating healthy competition in the entire fleet.

Managers can reward drivers for various achievements, such as most-improved driver, or most-efficient driver. With the app, drivers can also share their driving behavior through social media, allowing them to build a portfolio as a safe and compliant driver.

Azuga itself will recognize the top drivers in all fleets that are using its product — every quarter. The top ten drivers will be rewarded with cash awards, ranging from $200 to $75 per winner. These quarterly awards are an incentive program initiated and funded by Azuga to motivate its customers’ drivers to practice safer and more efficient driving, which in turn, saves companies even more money and increases ROI.
