How Will Logistics Be Different in the Future?

Trade patterns have remained more or less consistent until 2008. At that point, it seemed like the way logistics were done was no longer feasible. Changes have been taking place, slowly but steadily, and it looks like certain trends are emerging that could point to how logistics will be different in the future.

More Global Production

Exports from Asia were the giants of the industry for as long as most people can remember. That model is not stable, however. Economic growth should be present across the entire globe, with exports going to most places on the globe, as well. By fracturing the system and spreading it around, it gains strength. Each company is striving to reach an international market to take advantage of the financial benefits that it provides. In the modern age, there is no reason every major presence cannot do just that.

Flexibility and Convenience

Along these same lines, having a global market is more convenient for the customers. Multiple locations and various transportation modes both demand and facilitate flexibility. Transportation costs are still on the rise, so having a location relatively nearby, where ever your clients happen to be, is essential. This is another reason production in Asia will likely see a major decrease. The viable process of "Near shoring" all but guarantees it.

Honorability

Lastly, with a more conscientious society, logistics are being pushed toward end-to-end visibility. Customers want to do business with sustainable and compliant companies that do not damage the environment or economy with their process. Legislation to prevent bribery and corruption should refresh the industry and allow the cleanest businesses to be the most successful. This is a very positive change for the better.

With a changing system, no one can afford to be left behind in the old way of doing things. In fact, with the entire world  of logistics moving to a healthier, more stable, and more sustainable place, accepting these changes can lead to great success.
