The Importance of Complexity in the Logistics Industry

The Importance of Complexity in the Logistics Industry | The Dependable Companies

The service provided by the logistics industry is relatively straightforward -- that is, getting a product from point A to point B. Exactly how that happens, however, is anything but simple. Indeed, in order to deliver goods effectively and efficiently, there are myriad steps and factors involved in the process. Enter complexity, which, in the context of logistics, refers to the intricacies of supplying businesses with materials and shipping out products in an increasingly globalized supply chain. If managed well, complexity can be a valuable asset to a company operating in the field and, consequently, its clients.

Managing Multiple Layers

To better illustrate the role that complexity plays in logistics, take an example of a pallet of specialized equipment that needs to be shipped from the United States to Europe. Delivering the equipment successfully to its end market involves a number of steps and considerations that include, but are not limited to, the following:

  • Trucking to a port.
  • Warehousing for an indefinite amount of time.
  • Shipment via air or sea.
  • Dealing with applicable tariffs and fees, foreign or otherwise.
  • Third-party delivery to the client.

Each of these elements -- either on their own or combined -- can be a challenge for companies not experienced in supply chain management. Therefore, logistics providers that are poised to handle multiple entities of the process, particularly overseas, will find themselves at a distinct advantage.

Delivering the Goods

Logistics companies skilled in complex supply chain management and economics offer the following attributes:

  • Transportation expertise and know-how.
  • An established list of suppliers.
  • Large distribution center network.
  • Established relationships with partner networks.
  • Harbor drayage capabilities.
  • Multiple company offices, preferably interspersed globally.
  • Staff well-versed in national and international shipping laws.

These attributes demonstrate that complexity in the logistics industry is integral to a company’s ability to provide effective delivery. In fact, in today’s global marketplace, complexity has almost become essential for successful implementation of services. As such, the future of the industry depends on having such an infrastructure in place to seamlessly deliver goods -- including that pallet of specialized equipment -- from one customer to another.
