As technology advances and the world continues to transform, the world of logistics is also changing. Logistics is of course the coordination of complex operations involving people, facilities and supplies. There are many trends shaping the way logistics is going to continue functioning now and in the future. These trends are not the same as they used to be. The trends change as the times change. Right now, some trends that are shaping the future of logistics are:
- Flexibility. As the world gets smaller through technology, consumer requirements become more and more diverse. This requires flexibility and adaptation, so a supply chain can meet unexpected changes and circumstances.
- Near Shoring. Years ago it was popular to move manufacturing to places like Asia. Today, as transportation costs rise, manufacturing is brought closer to the end user, so there are less transportation costs.
- Information Technology. Because of globalization supply chains are becoming more complex and require advanced information technology solutions. They need to have high-tech systems for storing, retrieving and sending information.
- Continuity. People expect their products soon. They hate delays. In order to ensure continuity in transport there have to be many options, because otherwise delays exist. If there are many modes and routes available, then the likelihood of delays decreases.
- End-to-end Visibility. Because of the technology that exists today, suppliers are able to see the entire supply chain. This helps them achieve demand-driven planning. They can make efficient choices regarding changes in sourcing, supply and demand.
- Sustainability. The sustainability of products and how they are transported is becoming increasingly important to consumers. This means that they expect businesses to limit their social and environmental impact on society.
New Trends
Trends continue changing. Supply chains have to continue to grow and adapt. This means staying on top of the continuing transformation of logistics. These trends and others are shaping the future of how the logistics of manufacturers and suppliers are changing.
