You’re a trucker. You love the road. But you also love your spouse. Fortunately for you, those two loves don’t have to be mutually exclusive.
First, worry not. Being away from your loved one doesn’t mean they are going to love you any less. Research shows that absence really does make the heart grow fonder.
Does this mean you can just hit the road and not give any more thought to your loved one until you return? Of course not. Understanding, balance, and – most of all – communication are crucial to growing and maintaining a strong bond with your loved one while you’re gone.

There are a number of things you can do with your spouse or partner from while you’re apart, especially with the tools of our new digital age. Let’s dive a little deeper into love from a distance.
Old-Fashioned Love
We haven’t always had palm-sized fancy computers. How did truck drivers connect before we were all connected?
One easy way is to arrange to have flowers or other gifts sent to your loved one while you are away. These simple, random acts of loving kindness go a long way, especially when they are a surprise!
Another unique way to connect is to share a love journal with your partner. This may sound intense, and it is. But it’s also a great way to bring you two closer together.
Use a standard notepad or journal and each time you leave, your spouse writes five things they love about you. Upon your return, you write the same about them.
Neither of you can read what the other wrote until you are about to leave again. Wash, rinse, and repeat, every time you hit the road. Imagine how nice it is to read how many ways your spouse loves you before you leave, and vice versa.
Finally, take the sting out of wherever you are going by sending your loved one postcards from your trip. Write sentimental messages and send them via snail mail. Few things make your spouse happier than getting a loving post card in the mail from you.

Digital Love
We are living in the digital age. The number of tools out there to help people stay connected is almost countless. If you have a smartphone, you have new and unique ways to stay connected as you’ve never had before.
While you may need a stamp and a place to send a post card, e-cards can be sent from anywhere you have a phone signal and a device capable of going to a website. These digital messages can be customized and are often completely free.
Not there to give your partner a hug? Now you can give them a virtual hug. Is a hug not enough?
Chances are they will make your spouse smile, too. So don’t discount something just because it may seem a little, well, childish. How often do you lament the whimsy of children? Have some whimsy yourself and don’t be afraid to be funny when showing your love.
There’s An App For That
It’s no secret; apps are taking over the world. There are over a million in the Apple app store alone. More than a few of them are geared towards helping people connect over long distances.
While some apps are developed more for people that are in actual long-distance relationships, they still have useful applications for truck drivers who want to connect with their partners. Check out this handy list of apps that will help you stay connected while you’re on the go.

While it is important to keep your spouse happy while you are on the road, don’t forget your family, too. After all, the one thing you likely love as much as the glory of the road is the love your partner family. Don’t let them forget that.
