The U.S. Postal Service has asked companies to submit proposals for a rental contract for cargo vans to "fill in for vehicles out of service," according to a solicitation posted to FedBizOpps.gov.
The contract would extend for one year with an option to renew for an additional year. The value of the contract could reach just short of $1 million. The USPS estimates a possible demand of 50 to 100 vehicles for a single location, according to the Aug. 21 posting.
The quasigovernmental agency is considering mostly full-size vans from Ford, Chevrolet, Nissan, and Mercedes-Benz, as well as the Ram C/V Tradesman and Dodge Grand Caravan.
The USPS is now in the process of replacing its delivery fleet, and has released the list of qualified vehicle suppliers that will be winnowed down. The suppliers are submitting their final proposals, and the USPS will next seek prototypes for testing.
