2016 Subaru WRX Draws Top Safety Rating

The Insurance Institute for Highway Safety has named the 2016 model-year Subaru WRX a Top Safety Pick+ when equipped with the optional front-crash prevention system.

The addition of the optional EyeSight system is the only significant change to the WRX, which underwent a redesign last year, IIHS pointed out. Like the 2015 model, the 2016 WRX drew a “good” rating – the highest possible score – in all five IIHS crashworthiness tests. Those tests evaluate small overlap front crashes, moderate overlap front crashes, side crashes, roof strength and head restraints.

“The EyeSight-equipped WRX avoided collisions in track tests at 12 mph and 25 mph,” IIHS said. “The system also includes a forward collision warning function that meets criteria set by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. The vehicle earns the maximum 6 points for a superior front crash prevention rating.”

To qualify for Top Safety Pick, vehicles must earn “good” ratings in the moderate overlap front, side, roof strength and head restraint tests, plus a “good” or “acceptable” rating in the small overlap test. For Top Safety Pick+, vehicles also need an available front crash system with an “advanced” or “superior” rating.
