30-second Trucker Tip video: Caught in a sinkhole!

From 2006 to 2010, there were 24,671 insurance claims in Florida for sinkhole-related damages.

What happens when water dissolves minerals, typically limestone, in the bedrock? As Carolyn Mason reports in the October Overdrive, it can form a sinkhole. That can happen anywhere, but when it’s under a highway, it can be a shock for an unsuspecting driver.

The most sinkhole-prone states are Florida, Texas, Alabama, Missouri, Kentucky, Tennessee and Pennsylvania. However, factors other than geology can create unstable surface conditions. Some sinkholes are caused by mining, well-digging, heavy construction and underground leaking pipes.
