Certain Volvo VNL and VNM tractors are being recalled due to a possible defect in the trailer hand brake.

Volvo Trucks North America has issued a recall affecting 2,863 VNL and VNM models manufactured between 2012 and 2015.

In the affected trucks, manufactured between May 31, 2011, and Dec. 1, 2014, the trailer service brakes may drag, causing the wheel end to overheat and potentially cause a wheel end fire or tire blowout.

The recall notices states the cut out in the trim panel may restrict the trailer hand brake from returning to the off position.

Volvo says it has received no reports of wheel end fires or tire blowouts as a result of the condition, so Volvo considers this a proactive measure. They say the cause of the problem may be that incorrect trim panels may have been used, and/or the slot for hand brake travel may not be long enough to allow the handle to fully release.

A safety recall alert was released to dealers on Aug. 19, and owner notification letters will be mailed by Oct. 13.
