Volkswagen is shifting its second generation Tiguan to its MQB platform, as the compact SUV gets the most significant update since it arrived in 2007.

The Tiguan will be longer, wider, and lower than its outgoing model. It will increase by 2.4 inches in length to 176.6 inches. The wheelbase has been increased by 3 inches to 64.3 inches, and the height has been reduced by 1.3 inches to 64.3 inches.

It will also arrive with more cargo room (an additional 1.8 cubic feet to 18.4 cubic feet) and safety features. With the rear seats folded, the Tiguan provides 58.5 cubic feet, a gain of 5.1 cubic feet. During the redesign, Volkswagen reduced weight by more than 110 pounds.

New standard safety features include Front Assist with City Emergency Braking and Pedestrian Monitoring, active hood, Lane Assist and the Automatic Post-Collision Braking System.

Volkswagen first showed the new Tiguan at this year's International Motor Show in Frankfurt. VW showed a Euro-spec Tiguan, as well as a plug-in hybrid Tiguan. Volkswagen will begin selling it in Europe in April and then roll it out to other markets.
