Ford Sets Up Transit Van for Salvation Army

The Salvation Army has been serving meals to homeless men and women using a donated Ford Transit van that's been equipped as a mobile kitchen for the non-profit group, Ford has announced.

Ford donated to a campaign that raised funds for the van, and Ford employees helped serve meals on the first night the van entered service in Washington, D.C. The Salvation Army serves about 150 meals every night as part of its Grate Patrol program.

The customized Transit features a sink, refrigerator, and service window so it operates like a food truck.

The high-roof, extended-wheelbase Transit 350 HD powered by a 3.5L V-6 engine replaces the Grate Patrol's previous van that was retired last summer after 10 years in service. The Salvation Army has distributed more than 1.3 million meals to the homeless and others in need of something to eat since Grate Patrol began more than three decades ago.
