Notes on sacrifice and accountability after N.J. tanker driver’s death

Kearny NJ tanker crash

According to vocabulary.com, the definition of the word “sacrifice” is this: something you give up, usually for the sake of another cause.

Being that there is no specific “thing” mentioned, the idea of an actual sacrifice means different things to different people. Some people think it’s a sacrifice to go without Starbucks coffee for a week, and some people think it means pulling the wheel to the right when you know you’re probably going to die, instead of killing a bunch of innocent people on the highway.

Wednesday morning, in Kearny N.J., a trucker did just that.

We’ve all seen the mattress idiots. We were just beside one yesterday, a tiny Mitsubishi with a box spring tied to the top with regular old laundry line, flying down the highway. George immediately slowed and gave him a wide berth to get on by, and we both mentioned how stupid you have to be to do something so dangerous.

This is not how you transport a mattress.

This is not how you transport a mattress.

We were lucky, our mattress idiot took the next exit, and we were thankfully spared a potentially disastrous situation. The driver in Kearny wasn’t so lucky. Dashcam video and eyewitness accounts describe an incredibly selfless act of sacrifice on his part, and I will think of him every single time I see a mattress idiot for the rest of my life.

No charges will be filed against the mattress idiot who caused the death of the tanker driver. This alone assures there will be more carnage as a result of blatant stupidity. That being said, I’m sure the person who caused this particular wreck feels horrible about it, but life was lost as a direct result of their actions and there will be no accountability here in the mortal coil, other than their own conscience, and I believe that’s a travesty of justice.

Our thoughts and prayers are with the family of the driver, and this incident has forced us to take a minute to reflect on what sacrifice truly is. It’s easy to get caught up in material things, but in the end, none of those matter.
