Toyota will begin selling its Mirai fuel-cell vehicle on Oct. 21 in California in a clever tie-in with Back to the Future in which Michael J. Fox's Marty McFly sets that date for his time travels.

In the the 1985 movie, Fox's character uses a DeLorean equipped with a "flux capacitor" to travel 30 years into the future to Oct. 21, 2015.

"This Back to the Future-inspired milestone has taken 30 years to arrive, and Toyota has been developing hydrogen fuel cell technology almost that long," said Bill Fay, Toyota's division group vice president and general manager. "There’s no better way to generate excitement for a turning point in automotive history than with a film that celebrated the possibilities of the future."

The Mirai fuel cell sedan can travel 312 miles on a single fill of hydrogen and offers 67 mpg equivalent in all driving cycles, according to fuel economy ratings from the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency.

Toyota is selling the four-door sedan at a starting price of $57,000, and will also offer the Mirai on a three-year lease for $499 per month. The vehicle would be eligible for the $7,500 federal rebate and $2,500 California rebate.
