As Toyota began selling its Mirai hydrogen fuel cell vehicle, the automaker promoted the milestone by showing a version of the vehicle inspired by the "Back to the Future" movies that used Oct. 21, 2015 as the date where its lead character travels into the future.

To celebrate the vehicle's release, more than 300 new Toyota Mirai owners, dealers and special guests took part in a celebration on Oct. 20 to see a Mirai inspired by the Deloreon time machine of the movie.

So far, more than 2,000 people have requested to buy a Mirai in California, where it is first available, according to the automaker. The party celebrated those trailblazers with food, décor and conversation inspired by the “Back to the Future” vision of 2015.

New owners representing each of the dealership locations in Southern and Northern California received ceremonial keys. They will be behind the wheel soon.

While the Toyota Mirai isn't the exact embodiment of Doc Brown's vehicle in the movie, the hydrogen fuel cell vehicle burns H2 for fuel and emits water from the tailpipe.
