‘Virtual 5K’ in the offing Oct. 26-31 from the Truckin’ Runners group

Truckin Runners second Annual virtual 5K

Members of the Truckin’ Runners Facebook group are hosting their second-annual “virtual 5K” walk/run next week, October 26-31. “Get this,” notes race director and member Jon Narron, “it doesn’t matter where you are that week, you can participate.”

To participate in this “virtual” twist on the common 5K, simply register by emailing (jon.narron@gmail.com) or messaging Narron on Facebook. Include your full name, age on race week, and whether you plan on competing as a runner or walker.

At some point during next week, then, “you can run [5 kilometers, about 3.11 miles] and record your race on your smartphone app/gps watch,” Narron notes, sending evidence of the results (screen capture, picture, etc.).

One Truckin’ Runners members, operator Jeff Clark, noted on his Team Run Smart blog that he planned to participate in a local 5K and then share those results with Narron, who will then publish the Truckin’ Runners’ participants’ results via the Facebook group.

Just run and record your time on race weekend and submit it to … see where you stack up,” Narron says. “Think you have to be an olympic athlete to compete? Nope! There are walkers and runners divisions, as well as gender and age divisions and the coveted overall winner within the walker and runner divisions.”

Clark emphasizes what such events can do for misconceptions so many members of the public have relative to the trucking community on the whole, part of the reason he suggests getting involved in a local 5K. “The importance of spreading a positive face of trucking can not be overstated. Misconceptions can be wiped out with one conversation,” he notes. “Attending events like this blows stereotypes out of the water.”

Narron and company encourage participants to make any size donation to the St. Christopher Truckers Development and Relief Fund, its charity beneficiary of choice associated with the event. Participants can do that directly or by purchasing one of the 2nd Annual Virtual 5K T-shirts ($25 with $5 shipping and handling) pictured above. Follow this link to do so.
