The California Air Resources Board has ordered a recall of diesel-powered Volkswagen, Audi, and Porsche vehicles equipped with a 3.0L engine that contain improper emission control devices.

Volkswagen must submit a recall plan to CARB within 45 days of receiving the letter, or by Jan. 9.

The board's chief emissions compliance officer included the demand in a Nov. 25 letter to managers from the three brands. The recall would affect vehicles from the 2009-2016 model years, and stems from a Nov. 2 letter that first notified Volkswagen about the affected vehicles. The 3.0L engines were included in about 10,000 vehicles. Volkswagen is dealing with regulatory scrutiny over its 2.0L engines that contained software designed to defeat emissions testing in about 482,000 vehicles.

Vehicles fitted with the 3.0L diesel engines include the Audi A6, A7, A8, Q5, and Q7, as well as the Volkswagen Touareg and Porsche Cayenne.

Audi has announced it's moving forward with the recall, while Porsche has stopped sale of its Cayenne Diesel models.
