If you have to tow extremely heavy loads, and operate in a strenuous fleet environment requiring lots of torque, then the 2016 Ram 3500 HD equipped with the Cummins 6.7L diesel engine might be just what you need.
Recently, Work Truck magazine had the opportunity to test-drive the 2016 Ram 3500 HD LTD Longhorn with the Cummins diesel engine. We were excited about the opportunity to get behind the wheel of what Ram says is the most powerful truck in its class with the highest towing and payload capacity.
Massive Towing Capability
Whether your fleet carries its weight in a trailer or in the cargo box, Ram Heavy Duty trucks offer a massive towing capability when equipped with the available 6.7L Cummins turbodiesel inline-six diesel engine. The engine is mated to the available Aisin 6-speed heavy-duty automatic transmission. The powertrain combination generates 385 hp and best-in-class 900 lb.-ft. of torque. According to Ram, this is the most torque ever offered in a mass-production vehicle. The boost in torque was achieved by Ram Engineering and Cummins developing a new fuel delivery and turbo boost calibration.
With all that torque under the hood, the HD truck has a massive towing capacity. The towing capacity is 31,210 pounds based on SAE J2807 towing capacity test criteria. To handle the increased towing capacity, Ram engineers beefed up the rear axle ring gear hardware from 12 to 16 bolts on all trucks equipped with the 11.8-inch axle. The additional hardened bolts and stronger material are used in the differential case to assure long-term durability.
Diesel Powertrain Warranty
The first 2016 Ram Heavy Duty trucks began rolling off the factory line in the third-quarter of 2015. The Ram 3500 HD pickup trucks is assembled at FCA’s Saltillo Truck Assembly Plant in Coahuila, Mexico.
The diesel engines offer a five-year/100,000-mile powertrain limited warranty, while the gasoline engines offer a five-year/60,000-mile powertrain warranty.
Let me know what you think.
