E-log mandate set to take effect Dec. 2017, rule to be published by FMCSA Friday

eobr-1A federal rule to require truck operators to use electronic logging devices to keep records of duty status is slated to be published in the Federal Register on Friday, the Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration has announced. The rule will take effect Dec. 10, 2017, giving carriers and drivers a two-year window to comply with the rule’s requirements.

The rule requires drivers currently required to keep paper logs to use ELDs. Specifically, it will require use of ELDs by drivers who must keep records of duty status more than 8 days in a 30-day period. The mandate, however, also only applies to drivers of vehicles built in the year 2000 and after — a change made from 2014’s proposed version of the rule. It also will not apply to drivers in tow operations.

The rule also spells out safeguards against driver harassment via the devices, hardware specifications of the devices and supporting documentation drivers must continue to keep after the mandate.

Overdrive will be updating this post with more on the rule’s specifics today.
