Ford, Google Parner on Self-Driving Vehicles

Ford and Google are forming a joint venture to build self-driving vehicles using Google's technology in a partnership that's expected to be announced at the Consumer Electronics Show in January, reports Yahoo Autos.

For Google, the pairing would allow the technology company to avoid a costly build-out of automotive manufactuing infrastructure for its self-driving car project. Google now has 53 test vehicles on the road in California and Texas.

For Ford, the partnership offers a way to speed up development of autonomous-vehicle technology. Earlier this year, Ford expanded its Silicon Valley research center, and last week the automaker announced it was testing a fully autonomous Fusion Hybrid on California roads.

The testing is part of Ford's 10-year autonomous vehicle development program and a key element of Ford Smart Mobility, the automaker's plan to take the company to the next level in connectivity, mobility, autonomous vehicles, the customer experience, and data and analytics.
