Gasoline Inches Lower to $2.02 Per Gallon

The national average price for a gallon of unleaded gasoline fell six-tenths of a cent to $2.028 for the week ending Jan. 4, according to federal records.

The gallon price fell in seven of nine regions tracked by the U.S. Department of Energy, and is now 18.6 cents lower than a year ago. The prices increased slightly on the West Coast, driven by an increase in California. The West Coast added 3.3 cents to $2.663.

California leads the nation at $2.872 per gallon in the AAA's Daily Fuel Gauge Report. Hawaii ($2.683) and Nevada ($2.517) remain above $2.50. There are now 34 states with gasoline costing less than $2 per gallon. Missouri's $1.709 price is the lowest.

Meanwhile, the average price of diesel fell 2.4 cents to $2.211. Diesel now costs 92.6 cents less than it did a year ago.
