Hyundai Motor America is recalling 155,000 2011-2012 model-year Elantra cars because they’re at risk for unexpected braking tied to electronic stability control (ESC) sensor malfunction, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

ESC sensor malfunction could lead to the application of brakes for one or more wheels and to a reduction of engine power. In such a case, the ESC indicator lamp would be illuminated in the instrument cluster. This condition, NHTSA reported, could result in the loss of vehicle control.

To resolve the problem, Hyundai dealers will make certain all ESC sensors are operating properly and update the ESC system’s calibration. There will be no charge for this service.

The vehicles at issue were manufactured from Oct. 29, 2010, to Oct. 25, 2011. The recall is expected to begin Feb. 19.

Vehicle owners can reach Hyundai customer service at (800) 633-5151. Hyundai's number for this recall is 137.
