The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) has asked Volkswagen to produce electric vehicles in the U.S. to make up for the diesel emissions scandal, according to German newspaper Welt am Sonntag.
The EPA is currently negotiating with the German carmaker to have the company manufacture electric vehicles at its plant in Chattanooga, Tenn. This will be done following an agreement to find a solution for the 600,000 diesel vehicles with emissions that were up to 40 times legal pollution limits, according to Reuters.
The German paper did not specifiy if the EPA was asking for new models, or existing ones that feature electric or hybrid motors. It was also reported that the EPA requested that Volkswagen build a network of electric vehicle charging stations in the U.S.
Volkswagen is facing an increasing number of legal claims and has yet to come up with a fix regarding the diesel emissions scandal.
