Honda is showcasing its new two-motor gasoline-electric hybrid system paired with the Odyssey minivan that's now available in Japan, according to the company.

Honda is also refreshing versions of the gasoline-powered Honda Odyssey and Odyssey Absolute Premium.

The new Odyssey Hybrid and Odyssey Hybrid Absolute have a fuel economy of 26.0 km/L, and feature a Honda-developed powertrain Sport Hybrid Intelligent Multi-Mode Drive (i-MMD). The i-MMD is an upgraded version of the two-motor system that the Accord Hybrid and Accord Plug-in Hybrid currently use. These features are new to Honda premium minivan models, according to a Honda release.

Honda has also developed a motor for the vehicles that features a winding method and structure. It is 23% smaller and lighter than the previous version while still achieving high torque and high output. Having the lithium-ion battery of the vehicle placed underneath the floor of the first-row seats allows the hybrids to achieve its fuel economy and also allow for a spacious cabin.

The refreshed versions of the Honda Odyssey and Odyssey Absolute Premium now feature a large-sized armrest for the driver’s seat and a full automatic air-conditioning unit.

Honda hasn't announced plans to bring the vehicles to the U.S. market.
