We are pleased and proud to announce that John Downs has received a Lifetime Achievement Award from the Corona Chamber of Commerce.
The award was presented to John at the Chamber’s Annual Installation & Awards Gala, held at the new Circle City Center in Corona on January 21st. Nearly 500 people attended the 105th annual event.
John and his family have been active in many local charities and philanthropic organizations through the years, with the Boy Scouts of America being one of particular importance to the family.
“I am extremely honored and thankful to receive this award,” commented John Downs. “My family and I have been blessed by the Lord to be able to work hard and give back to our community.”
Downs Energy was established as Downs Oil in 1940 by John’s father, Elvin Downs. After graduating from Corona High School, John worked as a driver for Standard Oil. In 1962, John started working for his father and when Elvin passed away in 1975, John and his wife Catherine took over the helm of the company.
John and Catherine launched an innovative “key lock” operation in 1976 in Corona in order to sell fuel around the clock at the unattended site. This operation was the predecessor to today’s cardlock fuel facilities.
Today, the company’s five cardlock sites are run by Mike Downs and Sherry Downs Messner. In addition the operations include the sales of lubricants, bulk gasoline and diesel fuel and diesel exhaust fluid (DEF). Downs Energy is a member of the Commercial Fueling Network and is a Pacific Pride franchisee. These affiliations allow Downs’ customers to use their fuel cards in more than 100,000 locations nationwide.
Congratulations John! May God bless you and Catherine!
