The national average price of a gallon of unleaded gasoline increased 4.6 cents to $2.007 for the week ending March 21, capping a month of rising fuel prices that reversed continuously falling prices.
Gasoline remains 45 cents lower than a year ago, according to the U.S. Energy Information Administration. For the week, prices fell in nine regions tracked by the agency. The sharpest increases came on the West Coast where the regional average increased 8.6 cents to $2.48 and the Lower Atlantic, which saw an increase of 7.4 cents to $1.93.
Among states, 14 now have gasoline prices above $2 per gallon. California's $2.681 leads the nation. New Jersey offers the cheapest gasoline at $1.729 per gallon.
Meanwhile, the national average price of diesel increased 2 cents to $2.119. Diesel is now 74.5 cents lower than it was a year ago.
