Nissan Group of North America is recalling 3.18 million vehicles in the U.S. because their passenger air bags may not deploy properly during a crash.
The problem is tied to the occupant classification system, which might not detect the presence of an adult in the car’s passenger seat. As a result, the passenger air bag may be mistakenly disabled, according to the automaker.
Two accidents and one injury have been tied to the problem, according to National Highway Traffic Safety Administration investigation documents.
The remedy will involve software reprogramming in some models, and hardware replacement in others. Nissan is expected to notify dealers about the remedy plan details in late May. In turn, dealers will notify vehicle owners within the following two months.
The vehicles involved in the recall are:
- 2015-2016 Chevrolet City Express
- 2013 Infiniti JX35
- 2014-2016 Infiniti Q50
