Toyota Recalls Camry, Avalon for Air Bag Issue

Toyota Motor Sales U.S.A. is recalling approximately 16,880 Avalon and 41,630 Camry sedans in the 2016 model year, so dealers can address a potential problem with the occupant classification system for the front-passenger air bags.

In these vehicles, the front passenger seat is equipped with an occupant classification system (OCS) that activates or deactivates the front-passenger air bag system, depending on the weight of the occupant. But some vehicles may not have received proper OCS calibration during the vehicle manufacturing process, Toyota said.

With improper calibration, under some conditions, the front-passenger air bag and the front-passenger knee air bag may not deploy properly during a crash. This condition increases the risk of an injury to a front seat passenger, Toyota said.

Toyota dealers will re-calibrate the OCS to resolve the problem. Vehicle owners can reach Toyota customer service at (800) 331-4331.
