Volkswagen Group of America is recalling 2008-2009 model-year Audi A4, A5, and Q5 vehicles because their air bag control units may corrode and fail, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

Audi dealers will replace the air bag control unit, free of charge, in each of the recalled vehicles. NHTSA said on its website that Volkswagen hasn’t yet indicated the number of vehicles affected by the recall.

Continental Automotive Systems, which manufactured the air bag control units, met with NHTSA staff to discuss the problem on Feb. 23. During a May 13 meeting between NHTSA and the Audi AG Product Safety committee, a decision was reached to issue a recall for the three models.

Back in early February, NHTSA announced that Continental’s defective air bag control units — installed in an estimated 5 million vehicles — would trigger recalls issued by multiple automakers.

Vehicle owners can reach Audi customer service at (800) 253-2834. Volkswagen’s number for this recall is 6901.
