Ford Motor Co. is recalling 64,038 2013- to 2017-model year Ford Focus and Ford Focus RS vehicles with manual transmissions and rear hatchbacks, so dealers in the U.S. can update the hatchback interior release software, the automaker said.

In these vehicles, the rear hatchback can be unlocked and unlatched with a single press of the interior latch release when the vehicle is traveling under 4 mph. The latch release button is located on the left side of the steering column. Federal safety standards require two separate actions to unlock the door and operate the interior latch release control mechanism.

Ford, however, said it isn’t aware of any accidents or injuries associated with this issue. This is a safety compliance recall.

The affected vehicles with manual transmissions include 2013-17 Ford Focus vehicles built at Michigan Assembly Plant from Feb. 12, 2012, to Aug. 26, 2016 as well as 2016-17 Ford Focus RS vehicles built at Saarlouis Assembly Plant from Aug. 3, 2015, to Aug. 26, 2016.

In addition to the 64,038 vehicles recalled in the U.S., another 9,877 will be recalled in Canada.

Dealers will reprogram the body control module with updated software at no cost to the vehicle owner.
