All Nigerian cars must have speed limiting devices installed by Oct. 1, reports Premiumtimesng.com. Enforcement of the policy will start with commercial vehicles and fleet operators because they carry more passengers, according to the Nigerian Federal Road Safety Commission. Every vehicle in the country is expected to have the device within two years.
The technology was introduced in 2015, generating debate about its workability. The Nigerian Senate held a public hearing to discuss the policy, but ultimately supported its enforcement. The policy is expected to greatly reduce road accidents. Speeding causes more than 60% of collisions on Nigerian roads, according to the report.
Starting Oct. 1, any commercial vehicle without the device will be impounded and the driver will be arrested until the device is installed.
