Subaru of America is recalling 592,647 2010- to 2014-model year Legacy sedans and Outback crossover SUVs to fix a potential windshield wiper problem, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

The Legacy sedans at issue were manufactured from Nov. 26, 2008, to June 7, 2013. The Outback vehicles were manufactured from Jan. 9, 2009 to June 7, 2013.

Because of contamination, components within the windshield wiper motor bottom cover may interfere with each other, NHTSA said on its website. If an obstruction, such as a buildup of snow or ice, prevents the wiper arms from being able to stop in the parked position, the wiper motor may overheat and the bottom cover may melt.

This condition might lead to windshield wiper failure or might increase the risk of fire, according to NHTSA.

Subaru dealers will replace the windshield wiper motor bottom cover assembly, free of charge. This recall supersedes a previous one (11V-469). Vehicles that received a new wiper motor bottom cover under that recall campaign still need to come in for a new replacement. Subaru’s number for this new recall is WTK-71.

Vehicle owners can reach Subaru at (800) 782-2783.
