Volkswagen unveiled the I.D., a compact EV that features autonomous drive and will be the first in a new fleet of electric vehicles from the automaker.
The I.D. is a zero-emission vehicle driven by an electric motor with an output of 125 kW and has a range of between 400 and 600 kilometers on a single battery charge. The vehicle will be available by 2020, the automaker announced at the Paris Motor Show.
The I.D. will be offered with a fully-automated driving mode from 2025 onwards. The vehicle will be able to retract its multifunction steering wheel into the dashboard when in fully-automated mode, according to the automaker.
The EV is also the first compact Volkswagen based on the Modular Electric Drive Kit (MEB). The MEB platform will make use of a flat-floor battery setup to provide a higher capacity/range design.
