Tesla Hints at Performance Improvement for P100D Ludicrous Mode

On November 4, Tesla CEO Elon Musk tweeted that “there will be a P100D Ludicrous Easter egg soon that uncorks the full performance”. This has surprised many car experts and enthusiasts since the P100D drive system, which is present in the company’s Model X and Model S cars, already produces excellent results.

Acceleration

The Model X P100D with the Ludicrous mode can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.9 seconds and go from 0 to 100 km/h in 3.1 seconds. It has a range of 289 miles (as estimated by the EPA) or 542 kilometers (as estimated by the NEDC).

On the other hand, the Model S P100D with the Ludicrous mode can accelerate from 0 to 60 mph in 2.5 seconds and go from 0 to 100 km/h in 2.7 seconds. It has a range of 315 miles (as estimated by the EPA) or 613 kilometers (as estimated by the NEDC). The Model S is currently the third-fastest production car around the world, trumped only by the Ferrari LaFerrari and the Porsche 918 Spyder.

Despite the excellent specs of these models, Tesla seems to be pushing toward even greater performance. Twitter user Locoboff asked “You mean to tell me as fast as this thing is, the beast hasn’t been fully unleashed?”, and Elon Musk replied that “It is not actually left-handed”. Fred Lambert of Electrek muses that Musk’s comment could be a reference to a scene in the movie Princess Bride, in which two characters fight with their left hand only to reveal that it’s not actually their strong hand. If we interpret it right, it seems that the P100D Ludicrous mode has more tricks up its sleeve, and these tricks could be unlocked when Tesla releases its Easter Egg.

Takeaway on P100D Ludicrous Mode Update

Elon Musk has not given further details about this upgrade, so we’re not sure if it involves minor features (like the rainbow LED illumination for the charge port) or major performance-oriented changes. If it’s the latter, we can expect to see an increase in the power and speed of the Model S and X.
