Effective December 1, 2016, two new categories of oil standards will be licensed by the American Petroleum Institute: API CK-4 and FA-4. In the development phase, these oils have been commonly referred to as Proposed Category 11 or PC-11 for short.
Why do we need a new oil categories? The answer is simple. In part it’s about fuel efficiency, specifically the mandated fuel efficiency improvements for heavy-duty diesel engines. It’s also partly due to changes to the engines themselves that have made a new oil category necessary.
