Nissan North America is recalling 757 2013- to 2015-model year Altima cars, 2015-2016 Rogue SUVs, and 2016 Maxima cars to address an occupant classification system problem that might lead to air bag malfunction, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

The wrong occupant classification system (OCS) electronic control unit (ECU) may have been installed in the front passenger seat, NHTSA said. This faulty ECU and seat combination may misclassify the front passenger seat occupant.

“If the front passenger seat occupant is misclassified, the air bag may deploy incorrectly in the event of a crash, increasing the risk of injury,” NHTSA warned on its website.

Nissan dealers will replace the ECU and update the OCS software. There will be no charge for this service.

The recall is expected to begin by Feb. 12, 2017. Vehicle owners can reach Nissan customer service at (800) 647-7261.
