Chevrolet's 2017 Cruze Diesel sedan provides 52 miles per gallon in highway driving when equipped with a manual transmission, making it the most fuel efficient non-electrified vehicle sold in the U.S., the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency has determined.
The Cruze Diesel also offers a range of 702 miles on a single tank of fuel, according to Chevrolet. The compact car is equipped with a 13.5-gallon fuel tank.
Chevrolet has redesigned its diesel-powered Cruze for the 2017 model year. The car was sold as a 2014 and 2015 model-year vehicle in 2013 through 2016, said Nick Jaynes Morgan, a Chevrolet spokesman.
A new Ecotec 1.6-liter inline four cylinder turbo diesel engine powers the car with peak power ratings of 137 hp and 250 lb.-ft. of torque. The engine is sourced from General Motors' global diesel factory in Turin, Italy.
The vehicle carries over enhancements brought to the gasoline-powered Chevrolet Cruze, which was redesigned from the ground up for the 2016 model year, Morgan said.
The most efficient Cruze Diesel for highway driving pairs the engine with a 6-speed manual transmission. It returns 30 mpg in city driving and 37 mpg combined.
The Cruze Diesel with a 9-speed automatic transmission provides 47 mpg in highway driving, 31 mpg in the city, and 37 mpg in combined cycles.
Chevrolet has begun shipping the first 2017 Cruze Diesel sedans to dealers. Chevrolet will offer the diesel engine option in the Cruze Hatch for the 2018 model year.
The Cruze Diesel sedan retails for $24,670.
