Tackling fuel-related fraud remains a serious matter for U.S. fleet managers, but it’s also a large priority for fuel providers like Shell.
Thanks to independent research from Shell, we now know that over half of U.S. fleet managers consider fuel-related fraud a major issue for their business. But it’s not only managers who see fuel-related fraud as a cause for concern—nearly half of their fleet drivers agree. Two in five say they’ve witnessed a fellow driver committing some type of fraud, with fuel siphoning highlighted as a common example. Other practices include account hacking, cybercrimes, and drivers paying for fuel with cash to disguise the cost of additional purchases.
There’s no denying that fuel-related fraud is costly. Almost half of the fleet managers surveyed say fuel accounts for more than 20% of their operating costs. Fleet managers across the board agreed that better fraud detection could reduce fuel spend by 5%-10% or even more. Fortunately, there is a solution— placing a greater focus on fraud provides an opportunity for greater savings.
According to managers, driver education plays an important role in cracking down on fuel-related fraud, but only 27% say they are able to provide the necessary training due to a lack of time and resources.
There’s also a significant knowledge gap between U.S. fleet managers and drivers when it comes to fraud. Seventy-two percent of managers say they feel informed about the latest developments, but only 4 out of 10 drivers feel the same.
One of the consequences of this knowledge gap is that many drivers consider some fraudulent behaviors to be acceptable practices, most notably siphoning fuel. Additionally, a third of U.S. fleet drivers believe it’s acceptable to occasionally use their company vehicle to run a personal errand.
So, how can fleet managers improve fraud detection practices and improve their bottom line without using abundant time or resources?
Fuel card providers play a large role in helping U.S. fleet managers combat fraud. Shell fuel cards alone are used to make around 260 million transactions worldwide annually and with fuel card usage on the rise, fuel-related fraud has diminished.
The Shell Fleet Navigator™ Card offers improved fleet management and insight, while increasing savings. And it’s all thanks to unprecedented control and customization over the information you receive. It delivers the ultimate flexibility to help your fleet drive smarter and improve your bottom line along the way
What else? It also helps fleet managers combat fraud every day by using fraud detection technology to identify suspicious card activity and flag it to account holders. Additionally, case managers and analysts use advanced software to monitor every single payment made with a Shell fuel card to quickly detect and react to potential fraud. The ability to instantly enforce your company’s policies, combined with the access offered by one of the nation’s largest fuel networks, gives you the opportunity to significantly reduce out-of-policy expenditures and save up to 10% on your overall fuel spend.
