A federal judge has ordered Volkswagen to pay a $2.8 billion criminal penalty on April 21 under a deal negotiated with the U.S. government to resolve its diesel emission scandal.

In January, Volkswagen agreed to pay $1.5 billion in civil penalties. The company has also spend $11 billion to buy back cars and offer other compensation, reports the Los Angeles Times.

U.S. District Judge Sean Cox approved the settlement six weeks after the company pleaded guilty to conspiracy and obstruction of justice charges relating to nearly 600,000 diesel vehicles that included a cheat device that turned on pollution controls only during testing.
