Chrysler Fiat Automobiles is recalling 1,178 2017-model year Jeep Compass SUVs equipped with a six-speed transmission because the left front halfshaft may not be properly seated, according to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

As a result of this condition, the left front halfshaft may disengage from the transmission, break or both, the safety agency reported.

“If the left front halfshaft disengages or breaks, the vehicle will have a loss of drive,” NHTSA warned on its website. “Additionally, if the vehicle is parked without using the parking brake, the vehicle may roll, despite being in 'Park.' Either condition may increase the risk of a crash.”

Jeep dealers will inspect the left front halfshaft and replace it if it’s not properly engaged in the transmission, NHTSA said. There will be no charge for this service. The recall is expected to begin on June 23.

Vehicle owners can reach FCA customer service at (800) 853-1403. FCA’s number for this recall is T26.
