Mazda is recalling 227,814 2014-2015 Mazda6 and 2014-2016 Mazda3 cars because of potential parking brake failure, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration reported.

In these vehicles, water might enter the brake caliper and cause the parking brake actuator shaft to corrode and possibly bind. As a result, the parking brake may not engage or disengage fully.

“If the parking brake does not engage properly, the vehicle may move unexpectedly if it is parked on a slope, increasing the risk of a crash,” NHTSA said on its website.

Mazda dealers will check the parking brake actuator shafts and replace any that are corroded. There will be no charge for this service.

The recall is expected to begin Aug. 21. Car owners can reach Mazda customer service at (800) 222-5500. Mazda’s number for this recall is 1217F.
