Ford's 2018 Expedition has achieved an EPA fuel economy rating of 20 mpg combined, making it the first large SUV to reach that level.
The rear-wheel Expedition has also been rated to achieve 24 mpg on the highway and 17 mpg in city driving, while the four-wheel-drive model achieves 19 mpg combined, 22 mpg on the highway, and 17 mpg in the city.
The competing rear-wheel Chevrolet Suburban has achieved a rating of 19 mpg combined, 23 mpg on the highway, and 16 mpg in the city.
Ford reduced the weight of the vehicle by about 300 pounds in a redesign that included a shift to an aluminum alloy body and redesigned high-strength steel frame. Ford is pairing a more powerful turbocharged 3.5L EcoBoost with a 10-speed automatic transmission.
