London’s older, diesel polluting vehicles are causing some of the worst air in Europe, and will be charged a new 10-pound ($13) T-Charge when entering the central city.
Drivers of older diesel cars are currently paying the 11.50-pound congestion charge and will now pay a total of 21.50 pounds to drive an affected vehicle in central London.
“The shameful scale of the public health crisis London faces, with thousands of premature deaths caused by air pollution, must be addressed,” said Mayor Sadiq Khan in an emailed statement. “Today marks a major milestone in this journey with the introduction of the T-Charge to encourage motorists to ditch polluting, harmful vehicles.”
