Opel is expanding its crossover and SUV offering in the South African market with the introduction of the Opel Crossland X and Opel Grandland X to the region over the next few months.

Opel will introduce its Opel Crossland X subcompact crossover to the market in December 2017, and the Opel Grandland X crossover SUV in the first half of 2018, the automaker said in a release. Opel retail in the country will be handled via 35 dealerships, and two flagship stores for the brand are under construction in Johannesburg and Cape Town.

Opel also plans on eventually introducing the next generation of the Opel Corsa supermini car to the region as well.

Effective Jan.  1, 2018, the Opel dealers will take on the aftersales business of GM brand Chevrolet. Chevrolet will no longer be offered in South Africa at the turn of the year, according to a release from Opel.

“We view South Africa as an important market,” said Matthias Seidl, Opel’s Executive Director Sales Operations, at the presentation of the Crossland X in Johannesburg. “South Africa is a strategic investment for Opel and our aim is to take the brand from strength to strength in South Africa and other key markets.”
