Chinese ride-hailer Didi Chuxing is in the early talks with 12 automakers, including the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance and Ford Motor Co., to set up an electric-vehicle autonomous ride-sharing service in China, reports Engadget.
While talks are still in early stages, the goals outlined in the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance’s "Alliance 2022" strategic plan indicate that the companies may be supplying vehicles to Didi’s autonomous ride-sharing service by the year 2022.
The Alliance 2022 is a six-year plan that the Renault-Nissan-Mitsubishi alliance first announced in September. In its plan, the alliance announced it would release 12 battery-electric vehicles by 2022, as well as 40 vehicles with different levels of autonomy.
These vehicles would be likely candidates for Didi’s proposed electric autonomous ride-sharing service, reports Engadget.
In 2016, Did Chuxing purchased Uber's China operations in exchange for a 20% stake in the merged operation.
