Toyota's 2019 RAV4 will enter its fifth generation with increased power and fuel economy, as well as an added trim grade that emphasizes the sportiness of the gasoline-electric hybrid model.
The gasoline model is powered by a new Dynamic Force 2.5-liter inline-four cylinder engine with variable valve technology (VVT-iE) that's mated to an eight-speed Direct-Shift automatic transmission. The hybrid model adds Toyota's hybrid system (THS II) that's paired with an electronically controlled CVT (continuously variable transmission).
The vehicle will be built on the TNGA K platform and use Multi-Link rear suspension. The Toyota Safety Sense 2.0 (TSS 2.0) package of driver-assist technologies is now standard.
The Entune 3.0 infotainment system offers an optional Wi-Fi hotspot powered by Verizon and will be compatible with Apple CarPlay. The system also incorporates Amazon Alexa voice commands.
Toyota has improved the compact SUV's off-road capability with available Multi-Terrain Select and an all-wheel drive system with dynamic torque vectoring and the ability to disconnect the rear driveline.
The RAV4 Hybrid will offer XSE Hybrid, a new sporty trim grade that's essentially an exterior appearance package with its piano-black accents.
Toyota revealed the vehicle at the New York International Auto Show.
