Herbert Diess has been named as the new CEO of the Volkswagen Group after the automaker replaced Matthias Mueller from the position for failing to refocus the group’s portfolio of car brands after the diesel emissions scandal in 2015.
The Volkswagen Group also revealed that it will be organized into six business areas, and will also create a specialized portfolio for China, according to a release from Volkswagen. It will split its brands, which include Audi, Porsche, Skoda and Lamborghini, into three new vehicle groups in categories labeled “volume,” “premium,” and “super-premium”.
Diess, who previously served as the company’s brand manager, will focus on the groups “Strategy 2025” to transition the company as a leader of cleaner vehicles. He will also oversee VW Group research and development, and its Vehicle IT group.
