Most electric cars need to be plugged in after they’ve traveled 200 to 250 miles, and charging them can take an hour or more. A round-trip from Los Angeles to Las Vegas could take 8 hours driving time, and over 5 hours of charging time.
Charging speeds and plug-in locations make the trip a bit challenging. The U.S. has about 24,000 public charging stations, with an average of fewer than three charging posts. Chargers are often much slower than advertised top speeds and some electric-car drivers have to carry multiple adapters.
