The American Transportation Research Institute launched its 2022 Top Industry Issues Survey on Tuesday. The annual survey asks trucking industry stakeholders, including owner-operators, to rank the top issues of concern for the industry and identify potential strategies for addressing each.
Now in its 18th year, ATRI’s annual analysis ranks the issues overall and also provides insights into how critical topics are ranked differently by motor carriers and professional drivers. The report also allows the industry to monitor issues over time to better understand which issues are rising, or falling, in importance.
“The annual Top Industry Issues Survey has long been a crucial part of understanding the issues facing our country’s supply chain,” said ATA Chair Harold Sumerford, Jr., CEO of J & M Tank Lines, Inc. “ATRI’s research provides a chance for thousands of trucking industry professionals, from drivers to executives, to weigh in on the most important topics that affect trucking and collectively decide on the best strategies for addressing each.”
The results of the 2022 survey will be released Oct. 22 as part of the American Trucking Associations' Management Conference & Exhibition to be held in San Diego.
Fleets and drivers are encouraged to complete the 2022 survey, which will remain open through Oct. 7.

In last year's survey, fuel prices, truck parking and driver compensation were the top three trucking industry concerns for owner-operators. Across all truck driver respondents, including owner-operators and company drivers, driver compensation and truck parking tied as the top concern, followed by detention/delay at customer facilities and fuel prices. For all respondents to the survey, including drivers and fleet representatives, a perceived "driver shortage" topped the list for the fifth consecutive year.
